Actually Thankful was very much controlled Kelly. The record company and the Idol producers wanted her to get in the studio during the Idol tour and record like 20 songs that had already been prepared and she said no, she wanted to wait and take the time picking the songs out herself and having her own input and not just rush out an album just to have an album. She has said even recently as last year that her old manager and Idol creator Simon Fuller was very supportive and worked with her and she got to even co write on some of the songs, "Trouble With Love Is", "Miss Independent", "Thankful", "You Thought Wrong" all had co-writing by Kelly on the album, which was NOT the original intent of the record company. So when you say it was a "controlled" album, it wasn't actually. Kelly has always said from day one, she wasn't going to record something just to record something, she will record songs that SHE wants to record. .So pretty much the only songs on that album that were "forced on her" would have been the two Idol songs "A Moment Like This" and "Before Your Love." The rest were all picked by Kelly herself to record. She also said the reason for the different styles on "Thankful" was that she wanted to show on her debut album all the different styles that she loved singing and wanted "something for everyone" for that first album. Just a little FYI in response to the post on Thankful.
Yeah indeed, Sober is really a masterpiece on it's own right!
It's incredible how she's dealing so well with vocal gymnastics and transitions with octaves.

My December would top my list of favourite albums so of course it is my fav kelly album as well. Breakaway is a great album as well tho. Thankful, however, sucks (maybe I shouldn't say that on a fan forum, but anyway). I think the reason for this might be there is a huge difference between when she does the music she really wants to and when she records a song beacuse somebody tells her to.
Thankful is, as all Idol-winner albums, fully controlled by label-people to make it as commercial as possible.
Breakaway is kind of semi-commercial but you can clearly see that she has been able to take the more rock-oriented profile she wants, plus she co-wrote half of the songs and chose herself to have a live version of Beautiful Disaster, so it's still partly "her" album. The massive success is probably due to fact of combining commercialism with her leaning towards what she really wants to do.
It's not that I have anything agaist commercial music, I like some that have been entirely commercial through their whole career so far, It's just with kelly you can really tell the difference when she records a song simply because she wants to. I adds a different feeling to the whole record. And ending such a dark album with a touch of humour is just genious, makes you leave it with a smile on your face instead of being depressed after hearing all those lyrics about horrible things that occur in your everyday life. It might be the catchy songs that sell albums, but it is not those songs that make an album superb...
I hope kelly keeps on fighting for her rights to do the music she wants without only money in thought. Maybe the best thing for her would be quitting her label and signing a contract with a non-major one. I don't care if she "only" sell 2 million albums (that's actually quite a lot) and plays concerts in small venues, as long as she keeps on doing great music.

It was Amaaa-zi-zi-ng
First KC album I bought was Breakaway and I loved it so much then MD came out and for me it blew Breakway out of the water. So it's MD, then Breakaway, and I really didn't like Thankful.

My favorite album of all time would probably be My December... because I enjoy the entire atmosphere and intimate feeling that's put into each of the songs.
Furthermore, it's got an incredible personal touch and a genuinity.
I love how she sings straight from her heart!
She always sings with an unerring much emotion and devotion.

i like my december the best .. i think each album is getting better.. probly bcoz kelly is getting more input into the newer albums... chivers it the best song ever... lol and i think most girls can relate:)
i totaly don't know what's the best kelly record
breakawy maybe becouse it was the time i become a kelly fan
or my december becouse it's a personal album from kelly
I would say My December, because to be able to create such a classic album from your own experiences shows just how truly talented Kelly is. The way she stuck to her own ideas and wasnt swayed into being commercial is an example to us all to believe in ourselves. Kelly has to release a live album though, because she sings better live than on CD!
I am going to have to say My December because I really like how personal Kelly is with the fans. Breakaway was good, but it was so commercial, my favorites off of it were BOY, Addicted, Hear Me, and Beautiful Disaster, and of course the singles. And thankful was just everywhere, and I don't really listen to it that much, but it is okay. I just really love My December because it is so Kelly, and I can relate to EVERY SINGLE SONG!! Literally, and it has really helped me through a lot. The cool thing was, I became a fan of Kelly in mid-2006, and i looked up to her so much. I was going through this really crappy relationship/friendship problem, and then she released My December. It is so cool when your role model writes music that is like straight from your heart. That is why Kelly is so important to me because I didn't feel like anyone understood what i was feeling, and then My December came out and it was freaky how well i could relate! But that was the ultimate! So, My December most definitely! my favorite album ever because she wrote it and it is so intimate!
I love all of them. I think Breakaway would be my absolute favourite, just becauase all the songs are of course amazing, as all Kelly's songs are, but Breakaway reminds me of when i was just discovering Kelly and her awesome voice and everything. =]

I love every album. I bought Breakaway first beacuse I heard Since U Been Gone and I was hooked. When I bought the album and first listen to it och I loved every song on it. It really helped me and I started to open up more and more. Nearly three month before My December was relised I bought Thankful and it was good to. When My December came out I fell in love with it complete, you can feel the emotion in every song and I think Kelly is better and better. I love them all, but I think I love My December little more. So I say My December.
Personally, I think that each and every one of Kelly's albums has different qualities.
However, I think Kelly has developed her languishing voice a LOT through her years in the industry, even if she definitely is a genuine singing talent.
So my favorite album is MY DECEMBER, because I love the intensity, intimacy and the whole enterity in it.
But off course, I also LOVE Breakaway and Thankful deeply.
The album Breakaway definitely helped me to get through a rough period, and My December was a spectacular follow-up to it.
The song Anytime from Thankful is my favorite song ever, and of course I love the genuinity and versitality from her first studio album.
